Is inline skating hard to learn?

No. If you have skated on ice, skied or roller skated, you will transfer quickly. From scratch, expect a few sessions before it clicks, and it does click.

Inline skates or quad roller skates, which is harder?

Quads, generally. The longer wheelbase of an inline skate is more stable underfoot, which surprises people.

Is it a good workout?

One of the best available. Low impact on the joints, works the legs and glutes hard, and unlike running you can hold an elevated heart rate for an hour without it feeling like punishment.

Are rollerblades and inline skates the same thing?

Yes. Rollerblade is a brand whose name swallowed the sport, the way Hoover swallowed vacuum cleaners.

Does inline help ice skating, and the reverse?

Yes, in both directions. Ice sharpens precision, inline builds engine. Skaters who do both progress faster at each.

Why are speed skates so long?

Stability and speed. A racer rarely needs a tight turn, so the manoeuvrability trade costs nothing. The full reasoning is in our frames guide.

How fast do they go?

Elite track racers regularly sit at 50 to 60 km/h, and downhill events like St Moritz have seen around 110 km/h.

What actually makes someone fast?

Technique before fitness. A skater with clean form cruises at speeds a fit skater with poor form burns out chasing. Coaching pays for itself early.

Which way should the wheel graphics face?

Whichever you like. It changes nothing but the photographs.

What are standard boot heights?

Measured from the centre of the inside ankle bone: 3cm for short track, 2.5cm for inline speed, 2cm for long track. Unusual ankle bone heights make custom boots look different between training partners, and that is by design.

Can I use indoor wheels outside?

You can, once. They are too hard for outdoor surfaces, the ride is miserable and the wheels suffer. The wheels guide explains what to run instead.

How do I break in new Bont boots?

Mostly you don't need to, because the last is shaped like a foot. Heat moulding removes what little break-in remains.

Are there speed skate shops near me?

UK skate shops are rare and speed specialists rarer. We attend FISS race events around England with a limited range of stock to try on, so message before an event and we will check your size is in the van.

Is inline skating dying?

No. The 90s American boom faded, but the sport is thriving in Colombia, China and India, and the UK race community is active and growing.

Is it dangerous?

Any rolling sport can hurt you. Sensible locations, protective gear and a little humility keep it very safe.

Is skating in the Olympics?

On ice, yes: short track, long track, figure skating and hockey all feature at the Winter Games.
