Getting Started
Is inline skating hard?
If you've tried ice skating, skiing, or roller skating before, you'll pick it up quickly. If you're starting from scratch, it may take a few sessions to find your feet — but it's very learnable and well worth it!
Is roller skating hard?
It takes a little practice to master, but it's not very hard. Most people are rolling confidently within a few sessions.
Is roller skating or blading harder?
Roller skating is generally considered harder. Inline skates are longer and more stable, making them easier to balance on — though neither is particularly difficult once you get going.
Health & Fitness
Is inline skating a good workout?
Absolutely — it's one of the best. It's low impact, tones your legs and glutes, and gives your cardiovascular system a serious workout. Unlike running, you can keep your heart rate elevated for a full hour without it feeling like a slog.
Is roller skating good exercise?
Yes! Roller skating is low impact (great for your knees), works all the muscles in your legs and glutes, and delivers an excellent cardio session. It's a workout that doesn't feel like one.
Does ice skating strengthen ankles?
Not really — your ankles are held firmly in place by the boot, so there's minimal stress on them. The upside is it's very joint-friendly!
Inline vs. Other Skating Disciplines
Are inline skates and rollerblades the same thing?
Yes. Rollerblade is a brand name — they make inline skates. Over time "rollerblading" became a common term for inline skating in general.
Are inline skates or roller skates faster?
Inline skates are significantly faster. A skater on inline skates will comfortably outpace a skater on quad roller skates when sprinting.
Does inline skating help ice skating (and vice versa)?
Yes — the two disciplines complement each other well. Ice skating sharpens your technique (it demands more precision), while inline skating builds stamina. If you can do one, you'll adapt to the other quickly.
Speed Skating
Why are speed skates so long?
Longer frames mean more speed and greater stability at high velocities. Speed skaters don't need to make sharp turns, so the trade-off in manoeuvrability is well worth it.
How fast can inline skates go?
Very fast! In events like the St Moritz downhill race, skaters reach speeds of around 110 km/h (nearly 70 mph). In track racing, elite skaters regularly hit 50–60 km/h.
How do you skate really fast?
It starts with technique. A skater with good form can cruise at high speed with minimal effort, while poor technique means working twice as hard for half the result. A coach makes a huge difference — especially early on.
Gear & Equipment
Which way do inline wheels face — writing inside or out?
It makes no difference to performance. Most skaters prefer the graphic facing outward simply because it looks better!
What are the standard boot heights?
Boot heights are measured from the centre of the inside ankle bone. Standard heights are:
- Short Track: 3 cm
- Inline Speed: 2.5 cm
- Long Track: 2 cm
If you have particularly high or low ankle bones, your custom boot height may look different from your training partners' — that's completely normal and by design.
Can you skate outside with indoor wheels?
Technically yes, but we'd advise against it. Indoor wheels are harder and not designed for outdoor surfaces — you'll have a rough ride and risk damaging the wheels permanently.
How do you break in roller skates?
Bont boots are built on a last shaped like an actual foot, which means break-in time is minimal — sometimes zero. Just skate in them! Heat moulding can also speed up the process significantly.
Finding Skates & Shops
Do skating rinks sell skates?
Some do, but very few stock speed skates. For specialist equipment, you're better off coming to us.
Are there any skate shops near me?
There are a handful of skate shops across the UK, but speed skate specialists are rare. Your best bet is a quick search on Google Maps. We attend FISS race events around England throughout the year and carry stock for people to try on — contact us in advance to check we have your size available.
The Sport
Is inline skating dead?
Far from it! While the 80s/90s boom in the US has settled, inline skating is thriving globally — particularly in Colombia, China, and India. In the UK, the speed skating community is active and growing.
Is inline skating dangerous?
Like any sport, accidents can happen. Skate sensibly, choose safe locations, and wear appropriate protective gear — and it's a very safe activity.
Is ice skating in the Olympics?
Yes — multiple disciplines feature at the Winter Olympics, including short track speed skating, long track speed skating, figure skating, and ice hockey.
